Celebratory Bush Tucker Garden
Clients: Nikinpa, Aboriginal Child & Family Centre, operated by Muloobinba Aboriginal Corporation.
Brief: Nikinpa needed a celebration space that reflected its values and identity. It also needed to be ready quickly, in time for their upcoming 10th-anniversary event. The key elements were a native bush tucker garden with plants that can be used in various ways, such as food and crafts. But the essence of our scope was even better: 'We simply want a space that makes you feel good'.
Before
Design: Our approach centered on creating an immersive, dense landscape with canopies, transporting guests to the heart of the bush while keeping the central celebration space open. Despite the short timeframe, community involvement was paramount. Anyone with an interest was welcomed to share their thoughts, ensuring agency and long-term care for the garden by being involved and heard.
Result: The garden exclusively showcases native plants, with 90% being edible, such as aromatic herbs, leaves, berries, and fruits. Additionally, we've incorporated some very soft plants and flowers, inviting exploration of the garden.
Patience! Despite the space being relatively small, the canopy is the key element of the design and is slowly growing. Scented leaves trees and Davidson plums will play their parts in creating an immersive, lush, and protective canopy over the years to come.
After
With a bit of patience.
